Abstract
In the wake of unprecedented urbanization, the city-core of Mumbai became saturated, accelerating the pace of its suburban growth. It led the suburbs of the city to transform and gradually acquire purely urban characteristics. The present study takes the case of Mulund, a once lesser-known suburb that has undergone an immense transformation in recent times to become an integral part of Mumbai.
Urban transformation is a multifaceted process. Therefore, comprehending it requires an in-depth inquiry into all the aspects associated with it. For this study, two interrelated facets of Mulund’s transformation, namely, housing growth and housing inequality are evaluated to comprehend the changes in the housing front undergoing in the area. The study is mainly based on primary data, although some secondary data have also been used. The findings reveal many interesting aspects, highlighting the uneven and unsustainable nature of urban transformation in the area.
